Statement Against the Recent Attacks on the Rights of Trans Australians

Drummond Street Services condemns growing attacks on the rights and protections of trans and gender diverse people, and the harm this will cause across LGBTIQA+ communities.

As an organisation committed to social justice and intersectional lens, Drummond Street Services acknowledge trans, gender diverse and intersex people and communities’ rights, voices and demands as fundamental. We call on politicians to condemn proposals and campaigns which seek to roll back protections for trans people or to narrow anti-discrimination laws. This includes attempts to define sex in ways that exclude or harm trans and gender diverse communities.

These protections were hard-won and help people live, work and access services safely and without discrimination. We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, attempts to repeal these protections. A bill aimed at preventing discrimination should never become a vehicle for discrimination. Hate has no place in our legal system.

At Drummond Street Services, we see the impact that fear, discrimination and divisive rhetoric can have on wellbeing and belonging. We know from Australian research that legal affirmation and recognition for trans and gender-diverse people is associated with lower suicidal ideation, psychological distress, and improved wellbeing outcomes. Reversing or restricting these rights will risk TGD lives.

We stand in solidarity with our trans, gender diverse and intersex siblings and with LGBTIQA+ communities more broadly. We stand in strong defence of laws and policies that strengthen inclusion, safety and dignity for all.
